Welcome to the DEAT GIS INTRANET facility

Introduction to the GIS Site.

The GIS Intranet facility is a custom mapping application that lets you view one or more electronic maps in your Web Browser. All the available electronic maps that reside on the GIS server are grouped into several Map Services. You can use the GIS Intranet Facility to access over 100 different electronic maps, and you can also link to other map services available through the Geography Network or other mapping sites. With the GIS Intranet facility, you can create beautiful, informative maps using geographic data from DEAT's GIS server.

Facts and Figures

To date, close to 2000 1:50 000 map sheets and more than 70 1:250 000 map sheets have been loaded into the GIS Intranet Map facility
The database on which the GIS Intranet facility is built is the same as for the EDMS
This GIS Intranet facility was developed over a period of four months

Furthermore, the GIS Intranet Facility provides access to a library of ready-made maps in JPG or GIF formats.
How It Works: The GIS Intranet facility is a custom Web mapping environment developed around ESRI Internet Map Service. It can be used in a standard Web browser (e.g., Internet Explorer or Netscape) without any special plug-ins or applets.

Existing geographic data sets on the DEAT GIS server have been grouped into several Map Services. The grouping of data sets into Map Services is based on a user needs analysis that was carried out in the first quarter of 2004. Each map service will provide easy access to those maps that are regularly used by staff working in a specific functional area. Current Map Services that are available appear on the menu on the left hand side of the page and include the following:

Tourism
Waste management
Impact management
Biodiversity management
State of the Environment
Poverty relief
Africa
