1. What is ArcIMS?
The ESRI Internet Map Server (ArcIMS) provides users with online
mapping capabilities and access to published spatial and non-spatial
datasets. ArcIMS offers tools for viewing and navigating as well as
limited querying of your spatial and attribute data. The Map Display
can be controlled by deciding which layers should be displayed and
which not.

The toolbar is displayed above the Map Display area. If you hold
your cursor over a tool a name will pop up for that tool. The info,
find, and query buttons can be used to find information in the
database for the active layer. To use these tools it is necessary to
make the layer you are interested in active. To activate a layer
simply click on the radio button ( )
in the Table of Content on the right hand side. A message should
appear in the info frame on the bottom left hand side of the page.

4. The Table of
Content :
Map layers are listed on the right hand side of the Map Display area
in the Table of Content area. Some layers are scale dependent
( )
which means that if you zoom in or zoom out to a certain scale,
these layers will be displayed automatically, that is if the layer
visibility has been set to visible. If a layer's visibility is set
to not visible, this layer can be displayed manually by checking its
visibility to 'on' ( ).
The Toggle Legend & Layerlist button allows you to toggle
between the Layer list or the Legend. The Legend
displays the symbology for each visible layer.
Each layer has two interactive modes: Visible ( )
and Active ( ).
(NOTE : Image types like satellite images do not have attributes,
and therefore do not have an active mode). Most layers are initially
turned off to keep the download time reasonable. To view layers,
simply click on the Visible check box and then refresh the
map with the button found on the bottom of the list (If the Auto
Refresh check box is checked, the Map will refresh automatically).
The Active ( )
radio button allows you to make a specific layer active in order to
use some of the query tools found on the toolbar. For example, if
you wanted to query a layer, you would need to click on the radio
button to the left of the layer name to make it the active
layer, then click on the
tool in the tool bar to query the layer.
5. How to Query a
Layer?
The first step in querying a Layer is by making the layer to be
queried active ( ).
Then click the Query ( ),
Search ( )
or Info ( )
button in the toolbar to query the attributes of the Active Layer.
Click on one of the features of the active layer in the Map Display
area to display the attributes of the selected feature of features.
The Search (
button will make any stored query for the active layer available. If
there is no stored query for the current active layer, a message
will display saying that no stored queries are available for that
specific active layer.
6. How to Print a
Map
In the toolbar Click on
and
complete the fields in the next pop-up window. Then click the 'Print
Map' button. Print the Map using File >> Print in the top Browser
toolbar.
7. How to use a
Map Image (i.e. in another document)
In the toolbar Click on
and
complete the fields in the next pop-up window. Then click the 'Print
Map' button. Right click on the Map Image and either save the image
or copy and paste the image into a document.
8. Refreshing a
Map
For the map display, to reflect your command when you change the
visibility of a layer, you MUST use the Refresh Map button. For
example, if you click the Visible box for a layer, click the Refresh
Map button to display the new map in the Map Display. Likewise, if
you want to make a Layer not visible. If the Auto Refresh check box
is checked, the Map will refresh automatically.
